Seasonal Update: Autumn 2025

September 18, 2025September 14, 2025 Pauline Shen

What has Pauline Shen been up to? What can we expect to see from her next?

Season Summary: Summer 2025

  • My Camino story “Et Suseia” is published with Scrawl Place. This piece began as a 500-word contest entry and later, with a year’s worth of revisions, grew into something more substantial.
  • Check out my blog in case you missed these awesome interviews. I am delighted to partner with editors, writers, and publicists to bring you an insider scoop on what’s going on in the industry.

Updates & Work in Progress: Autumn 2025

  • Be sure to subscribe if you haven’t done so already. I’ll be streamlining my marketing and publicity efforts; this means fewer social media interactions. Check back on my website or blog for information on my writing and visual art projects.

What I’m Reading: Autumn 2025

  • I read Anne Tyler’s Three Days in June. Her characters are true to life. If you have never read Anne Tyler’s work before, I highly recommend reading any (or all!) of her books. She is my favourite contemporary author.
  • I re-read L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. There are so many rich descriptions and timeless characters in this story. And great nuggets of wisdom too! I followed this up with The Blue Castle, which is a lesser-known title from the same author.
  • I have just begun reading Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants. It is my first experience with this story as I have never read it nor seen the film adaptation. A heart-wrenching yet beautiful page-turner.

And that’s it. Enjoy autumn. Start the conversation by commenting below. Stay tuned for my next blog post. Wanna get it in your email inbox? Subscribe to stay informed of my newest articles, story reviews, updates, and more.

Seasonal Update: Summer 2025

June 19, 2025June 21, 2025 Pauline Shen

What has Pauline Shen been up to? What can we expect to see from her next?

Season Summary: Spring 2025

  • “Eighteen Ninety-Seven” released as a reprint with Literally Stories in April. I’m so pleased to see this story circulating once again.
  • My favourite short story is continuing to make the rounds in reprint form. “Glycerine” is published online with CommuterLit’s March 31, 2025 post.
  • Check out my blog in case you missed these awesome interviews. I am delighted to partner with editors, writers, and publicists to bring you an insider scoop on what’s going on in the industry. Spoiler alert! Releasing in July: Interview with Merilyn Simonds. …and more to come—make sure you’re subscribed to have these delivered directly to your email inbox.

Updates & Work in Progress: Summer 2025

  • I’m delighted to announce that my Camino story “Et Suseia” is forthcoming with Scrawl Place. The story began as a 500-word contest entry and grew into something more substantial over the course of about a year of revisions. A huge thank you to my beta readers for offering comments and encouragement on this one!
  • After an intense winter of working on my manuscript-in-progress as well as finishing-up a variety of short stories, I took a hiatus from writing in the springtime. I’ll be returning to my manuscript this summer. I’m especially looking forward to spending time with my protagonist. Seriously, I miss her as though she’s a real living person.
  • In following, summer is also an opportune time for me to conduct some research for my manuscript-in-progress. I’ll be visiting a variety of plant nurseries and greenhouses in order to take photos and examine the seasonal plants available, the general store set-up, and absorb the plant-y atmosphere. Why? A character in this story runs a plant nursery, so I’m taking stock of the details for scenes, setting, and general logistics.

Seasonal Update: What has Pauline Shen been up to? What can we expect to see from her next?

March 20, 2025March 26, 2025 Pauline Shen

Season Summary: Winter 2024-25

  • My short story “Coffee and Cream” has been reprinted online with Commuter Lit. If you haven’t read the story, check it out here. Back in autumn 2020, this piece began as a writing course assignment. It was picked up for publication in early 2021, and is now published multiple times over.
  • I was commissioned for a cover illustration with Sloth & Envy Press. Check out Stone Heart and other available titles on the publisher’s website.
  • Check out my blog in case you missed these awesome interviews. I am delighted to partner with editors, writers, and publicists to bring you an insider scoop on what’s going on in the industry. More to come—make sure you’re subscribed to have these delivered directly to your email inbox.

Updates & Work in Progress: Spring 2025

  • “Eighteen Ninety-Seven” will release as a reprint with Literally Stories in April. Wondering about the title for this piece? Although this particular story is fiction, I wrote it after poring over a collection of ancestral documents that my late cousin compiled in the early 1990’s. The booklet she made details some of what the circumstances were like prior to leaving for The New World and what the journey entailed. 1897 was the year my paternal ancestors came to North America from Europe and so it seemed a fitting title for this piece.
  • OPEN CALL: Guest Blogger. Got something to say about writing? Check out my submission call for guest bloggers here. Submissions accepted on an ongoing basis until the closing date of June 30th, 2025.

What I’m Reading: Spring 2025

  • Last season, I found myself totally enamored with Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi. The premise of the book is essentially what would happen if someone continued to pursue the other realm presented in C.S. Lewis’ The Magician’s Nephew. And what if that person was entirely unscrupulous? While the first section of this book can be a little off-putting, this is done by design to pull the reader into the action in a big, big way. I recommend this book, particularly if you’ve read The Chronicles of Narnia, as there are multiple references back to C.S. Lewis’ series throughout.
  • Another recommended read is Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. It is most assuredly a masterpiece. It does take some patience to pick through the information and get one’s bearings for the first third. The true inciting incident doesn’t occur until about a quarter of the way into the novel. You do, however, need the context leading up to that point to understand the full scope. I found it to be similar to Piranesi in the sense that it takes a little while to catch on, but once you do, it becomes an obsession! I found myself reluctant to set the book down.
  • I plan to read through Resonance: Essays on the Craft and Life of Writing. This is the recommended text for the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University. The collection addresses the fact that we, as writers at any stage in our career, all face challenges or obstacles in the process of writing.

And that’s it. Enjoy spring. Please share your comments below. Stay tuned for my next blog post. Wanna get it in your email inbox? Subscribe to stay informed of my newest articles, story reviews, updates, and more.

Seasonal Update: What has Pauline Shen been up to? What can we expect to see from her next?

December 19, 2024December 19, 2024 Pauline Shen

Season Summary: Autumn 2024

  • Manawaker Studios Podcast featured my short fiction “Glycerine.” I am so pleased with this production. If you haven’t done so yet, please go take a listen. It is under 10 minutes: Glycerine – Flash Fiction Podcast.
  • Three of my visual art pieces, “Nurture,” “Observe,” & “Steward,” are published online with Marathon Literary Review.
  • Big news! I’ve been commissioned for a book cover illustration. Scheduled for release in early 2025. More details to come.

Updates & Work in Progress: Winter 2024-25

  • Check out my blog in case you missed these awesome interviews. I am delighted to partner with editors, writers, and publishers to bring you an insider scoop on what’s going on in the industry. More to come very soon—make sure you’re subscribed to have these delivered directly to your email inbox.
  • I am completing my first full-length manuscript. I’ve been posting periodic updates on social media. The key to avoiding overwhelm is to break everything down into teeny tiny steps—and there are tons of those!
  • My Discord writing group is holding a Secret Santa event for December. We each receive a “wish list” of writing prompts from another participant and write a fresh story using those prompts as a gift for that person. Part of the fun is having to guess which writing group member wrote each story. This is my first time participating and it has been so much fun so far! The prompts I received were way outside my usual repertoire and it gave me a chance to stretch myself and my writing. Activities like this help fuel creativity in a big, big way.

What I’m Reading: Winter 2024-25

  • I read Piper Kerman’s memoir Orange is the new Black. You may recognize this book’s title from the television series adaptation of the same name. After taking a memoir writing course where Kerman was the guest instructor for a few Zoom sessions, I had to read her book for myself to see what was in there (No, I never watched the TV series). She’s an energetic instructor and the way she explained how to set-up scenes and incorporate deeper levels of storytelling was absolutely brilliant. If you have a chance to participate in one of her writer’s workshops, do it.
  • I read William Zinsser’s memoir Writing about Your Life, which also serves as a writer’s guide. Although I personally found some of Zinsser’s references to be an outdated stack of namedropping, he does offer sound writing advice. Keep in mind that the height of his writing career was a half century ago—technology was different, yet the writing process itself (inspiration, motivation, integrity) is relatively the same.

And that’s it. Enjoy winter. Please share your comments below. Stay tuned for my next blog post. Wanna get it in your email inbox? Subscribe to stay informed of my newest articles, story reviews, updates, and more.

Seasonal Update: What has Pauline Shen been up to? What can we expect to see from her next?

September 19, 2024August 30, 2024 Pauline Shen

Season Summary: Summer 2024

  • Blank Spaces Magazine published my visual essay “Beautiful Botanicals.”
  • After Happy Hour Review’s Summer 2024 issue included my visual piece “In Hand.”

Updates & Work in Progress: Autumn 2024

  • Check out my blog in case you missed these awesome interviews. I am delighted to partner with editors, writers, and publishers to bring you an insider scoop on what’s going on in the industry. More to come very soon—make sure you’re subscribed to have these delivered directly to your email inbox.
  • Three of my visual art pieces, “Nurture,” “Observe,” & “Steward,” are forthcoming with Marathon Literary Review.
  • I am turning my focus toward completing my first full-length manuscript. It’s like doing a large-scale home renovation project while continuing to live inside the house. I’m surrounded by scenes and characters who are constantly nagging for my attention. I’ve been posting periodic updates on social media.

What I’m Reading: Autumn 2024

  • Last season, I binge-read Sarah McCoy’s books. If you plan to read The Time it Snowed in Puerto Rico, clear your schedule. The sensual prose is absolutely mesmerizing. Once you begin reading, it is impossible to put down.
  • I’ve just finished reading William Zinsser’s On Writing Well. It’s a writing guide that has been awaiting my attention for some years. It is a guide primarily aimed at nonfiction writing; however, I’ve uncovered many helpful nuggets that I’m already placing toward my fiction writing. I do highly recommend this writer’s guide. I am currently reading Zinsser’s memoir Writing about Your Life, which also serves as a writer’s guide.
  • I read John Steinbeck’s masterpiece East of Eden and will be following that up with The Grapes of Wrath in the near future. I highly recommend reading any and all of Steinbeck’s novels. He had a keen eye into the human psyche. His fictional characters spring to life and the stories depict universal truths that simply cannot be ignored.

And that’s it. Enjoy autumn. Please share your comments below. Stay tuned for my next blog post. Wanna get it in your email inbox? Subscribe to stay informed of my newest articles, story reviews, updates, and more.

Seasonal Update: What has Pauline Shen been up to? What can we expect to see from her next?

June 20, 2024August 27, 2024 Pauline Shen

Season Summary: Spring 2024

“Flowers are complex in their varieties yet share a universal vulnerability to the elements—just as we do.” – Pauline Shen
  • My visual piece “Sunrise01” was included in Quibble Lit’s inaugural print issue.
  • Blank Spaces Magazine published a reprint of my short story “Glycerine” in March.
  • My short fiction “How to Make a Pet Rock” is published with The Bookends Review.
  • My visual essay “Beautiful Botanicals” is now available in the June 2024 issue of Blank Spaces Magazine. It features some of my pen & ink daisies.

  • Check out my blog in case you missed these awesome interviews. I am delighted to partner with editors, writers, and publishers to bring you an insider scoop on what’s going on in the industry. More to come—make sure you subscribe to stay up to date.
  • Quibble Lit’s second print issue, Vessel, will include my visual piece “Rebirth.” Glad to have this piece back in circulation and in print!
  • My visual piece “In Hand” is forthcoming in issue 23 of After Happy Hour. This is a digital collage that I made from my own original wildlife photos.
  • I’m working on my novel manuscript this season along with re-tooling several shorter works that had been sitting in draft form for far too long.

What I’m Reading: Summer 2024

  • Have you read Professor Laura Bates’ Shakespeare Saved My Life? It’s categorized as memoir. It is not your typical, “these things happened in my life,” style of memoir. This is the close reading of Shakespeare’s writing that you didn’t know you needed. The writing is succinct, yet the scenes are written with the kind of detail that makes this a page-turner. At the same time, each chapter is organized as a small section, so the reader can take breaks. Take those breaks. This book has gravity. Let it sink in. All. The. Things.
  • I’ve been binge-reading Sarah McCoy’s books starting with Marilla of Green Gables. Remember L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables? This book is a prequel that centers around Marilla’s coming of age. Each chapter contains rich historical and geographical details folded into a gentle and tender story.
  • Did you know Zorro came from a book? I’m reading Johnston McCulley’s The Curse of Capistrano (later re-named to The Mark of Zorro). There’s romance, adventure, and a bit of history all packed into one novella. A fun read.

And that’s it. Enjoy summer. Please share your comments below. Stay tuned for my next blog post. Wanna get it in your email inbox? Subscribe to stay informed of my newest articles, story reviews, updates, and more.

Season Summary: Winter 2023-24

  • I received a huge creative boost from participating in the winter 2024 Writing Battle. If you’ve been struggling with imaginative writing, this contest has the right measure of constraints and supports to assist you. There is a fee for participation, but the value for your dollar is high-quality. I’m already registered for the upcoming one in May.

What I’m Reading: Spring 2024

  • I finished reading C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. I highly recommend it. Yes, even for adults. There’s a great deal of detail in these stories that can benefit readers of any age.
  • After binge-watching the Father Brown television series starring Mark Williams, I’ve decided to read the original short stories by G.K. Chesterton. If you’re intrigued by social-political commentary infused with philosophy along with a solid mystery, Chesterton’s your guy.

  • “Glycerine” is set to reprint with Blank Spaces Magazine’s March 2024 issue. You can pre-order your copy here. I am excited to see this in print once again—it is a favourite.
  • I will be spending more time writing my work-in-progress this season. You can expect some incremental updates through late winter and into spring 2024.

What I’m Reading: Winter 2023-24

  • I finished Elizabeth Hay’s “Snow Road Station” and anticipate a likely third installation in this series. Have you read “Snow Road Station” yet? Do you read Elizabeth Hay’s books? Leave a comment to let me know your thoughts.
  • As part of my market research, I’ve been reading some romantic comedy bestsellers. One that stood out to me as having perfected the formula is “The Hating Game” by Sally Thorne. If you’ve read any of her books, please start the discussion in the comments section of this post. I’d like to know what you have to say.
  • For the winter, I’ll be continuing market research as well as reading old classics—some for the first time ever. At present, I’m binge-reading C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” is the first book of this series. I found the boxed set at my local bookstore, and so have decided to read the full chronicles. Have you read it? As a youth? Or perhaps as an adult? Let me know.

September 21, 2023August 27, 2024 Pauline Shen

Season Summary: Summer 2023

  • My visual piece “Eye” was released with Quibble’s Snake Eyes issue in August.
  • You can find my artwork “Word” in Cool Beans Lit’s Autumn 2023 issue.
  • New posts are up on my blog. You can continue to expect a series of short fiction reviews, posts on writing craft, updates and more!

Updates & Work in Progress: Autumn 2023

  • I am shaping my brand and messaging. You will notice gradual changes on my website, blog, and Twitter account.
  • With a few scene tweaks, I’ve pulled my manuscript out of the YA category and back into the realm of millennial fiction. Really, the adult characters took the story in a new direction all on their own. You will see fewer updates from me this season. I am pulling-back on writing time to conduct additional market research.
  • I’m looking to add more content in video form. I’ve set-up a Rumble account and am deciding whether to use YouTube. Please comment with your recommendations.

What I’m Reading: Autumn 2023

Photo by George Milton on Pexels.com
  • I spent the summer reading Jules Verne. If you only read one of his stories, I recommend “From the Earth to the Moon,” as it is unexpectedly humorous. In addition to having been ahead of its time, the characterization is excellent and contains social commentary on human behavior that is applicable to the present day.
  • Speaking of translated works, I also re-read Gaston Leroux’s “The Phantom of the Opera.” I first read it in seventh grade. Reading it later in life is a far different experience. I appreciate how everything surrounding the mystery of this Opera Ghost comes to a climax, not only with Raoul searching for his love Christine, but as the culmination of all the foul play that effects the new managers, the stage hands, and others. This isn’t the semi-cute lovesick phantom characterized in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical of the same name. He is 100% bad guy. Read it for yourself and see what I mean.
  • I am reading Elizabeth Hay’s “Snow Road Station.” This is a sequel to “His Whole Life,” although it isn’t specifically advertised as such. The narrative follows Lulu Blake who, in the previous book, was a supporting character grappling with her unstitched relationship with her brother, Guy, while also attempting to get her alcoholism under control. In “Snow Road Station,” we see Lulu confronting the reality of childlessness as she progresses from middle-age into her sixties. You see, while death is a certainty in life, motherhood is not. Hay captures this tragic realization in a well-woven tale of love and friendship.

And that’s it. Enjoy autumn. Please share your comments below. Stay tuned for my next blog post. Wanna get it in your email inbox? Subscribe to stay informed of my newest articles, story reviews, updates, and more.
